This extraordinary exhibition of work by Dr Sydney Ball spans a decade in the artist’s life and was in fact commenced by a celebration of his eightieth birthday.

Created between 1971 and 1980 the works are wildly colourful and compositionally robust in a manner few artists could achieve at scale. Great Falls, the largest, and arguably the best, for example, is a glorious 273 by 585cm of vivacity and movement meticulously controlled by a master painter.

As Patrick McCaughey states in the forward to the exhibition’s accompanying book: The Stain Paintings 1971-80  “The Stain paintings are one of the triumphs of Australian art in the 1970s and have been somewhat overlooked in the accounts of that difficult and puzzling decade. How good it is to see them again and what miracles of vitality and enterprise they are. Like all major works of art, they renew the senses and the soul.”
