NGV presents its inaugural international craft and design conference Parallels: Journey into Contemporary Making, which will be held on 17-18 September at the NGV.

The conference features more than 20 Australian and 10 international speakers who will discuss the complementary disciplines of craft and design, and the art of handmade production in today’s globalisation age.

Featured speakers include Italian designer Antonio Arico who studied briefly at Melbourne’s RMIT and now works on personal limited collections and collaborations with Alessi, Seletti and the Barilla Group; Wava Carpenter who worked for many years as curator of US-based Design Miami; and Cyril Zammit who founded the Design Days Dubai fair, the first of its kind in the Middle East and South East Asia

Local designers include Jon Goulder, Khai Liew, Dan Honey, Jon Wardle and more.

The first day of the conference will consider the commercial market for craft and design, which has been impacted by the growing demand for bespoke, handmade items and technology.

On the second day a group of internationally renowned craft and design practitioners will reflect on their practice, their personal and professional landscape and how they perceive changes to the world of craft and design.
