ONE Lab Summer Session 2012, which will be held at the New York School for Design + Science in Brooklyn, is a summer school program taking place this July and August.

Focusing on Future Cities, the program will address the emerging discipline of ‘global urbaneering’ – with participants including professionals from the architecture, material science, urban design, biology, civil engineering and media art industries.

The event includes a Design Studio, Future Cities Seminars and a Future Cities Workshop.

The Design Studio will encompass 100 hours over four weeks, with intensive exploration of the future of the city – using New York as a laboratory.

The Future Cities Seminars features 40 hours of TED style talks from celebrated architects, engineers, biologists, ecologists, industrial designers, physicists and artists – each offering radical new responses to the real needs and aspirations of future cities.

In the Future Cities Workshops, participants will learn the processes of synthetic biology, smart materials and nanotechnology, growing materials, grafting trees and plants, scripting and computational modelling for controlled growth.

The studio is offered on two levels, one for professional designers and students enrolled in professional schools or departments of design, the other for students and individuals of varied experience and background. All workshops are beginner level and no previous knowledge or experience is required. The top ten candidates will receive scholarships of up to 50 percent of the tuition.

Event is co-chaired by Maria Aiolova and Mitch Joachim, co-founders of ONE Lab.
