Part of the National Architecture Week activities organised by the Australian Institute of Architects (Victorian Chapter), Melbourne Architecture Annual (MA|A) is a Melbourne-wide festival that explores Melbourne and its architecture.

Through a program of exhibitions, installations, films, tours, talks and workshops based around Federation Square and Melbourne, the week-long festival running from October 22-28 aims to engage public discussion about architecture.

This year, the festival’s theme is ‘Community & Architecture’. With Federation Square’s 10th birthday coinciding with the event, this year’s MA|A will call on the public to discuss how people come together around architecture.

Events include:

Community and Architecture: Cultural Appropriations
Come along to the keynote event for MA|A 2012, where the public are invited to hear heart-warming stories and life changing events from architects who are making a difference in communities. This panel discussion will explore the ways architects are working to help improve health and lives, from communities ridden with poverty and violent crime in Brooklyn to right here in Melbourne. The speakers include Paul Pholeros (Healthabitat), Esther Charlesworth (Architects Without Frontiers), Jefa Greenaway (Indigenous Architecture Victoria) and Kate Ferguson (CoDesign Studio). Chaired by Jon Shinkfield (AECOM).

Ask an Architect
Ask an Architect is the opportunity for the public to book a free 20 minute consultation with an Archicentre architect during Melbourne Architecture Annual. This is a perfect opportunity for home buyers, builders and renovators to gain advice about their project.

LEGO for Little Architects
BMW Edge will transform into a room of LEGO masterpieces as families are invited to spend a Sunday morning building their dream homes, communities, buildings and cities with LEGO. LEGO for Little Architects is a fantastic opportunity for families and children to come together and let their creative juices flow and have fun!

Honey I’m Home: Visions beyond the white picket fence
In association with Melbourne Architecture Annual, ACMI have curated Honey I’m Home, a season of films exploring cinematic representations of home and community. The season premieres two new award-winning documentaries direct from the 2012 Sundance Film Festival – Detropia and The Queen of Versailles – in which notions of home and community assume a deeper, more urgent resonance set against our contemporary social and economic reality.

Our Houses: Food for Thought
Houses Magazine presents Our Houses, a conversation about creative collaborations with Stefano de Pieri, Donata Carrazza and Jan van Schaik. Our Houses is a series of events that explore and offer insight into the way architects and their clients work together. These informal, public forums look beyond the finished house to explore and clarify the architect-client relationship. In Our Houses: Food for Thought you are invited to join Jan van Schaik, of Minifie van Schaik Architects and his clients, and renowned chef Stefano de Pieri and his partner in work and life, Donata Carrazza, as they discuss the making of their home in Mildura.

By Bike
By Bike is an opportunity to take a Sunday morning leisurely bicycle tour from Brunswick to Federation Square with a group of Architects and building professionals who are passionate about community, cycling and the built environment. See and hear about their favourite community buildings and spaces and discuss different notions and interpretations of the idea of “community”. Speakers include Jeremy McCloud (Breathe Architecture), Marcus White (Harrison & White), Anna Lindstad (Hart Design), Adam Pustola (Lyons), Peter Bickle (ARM) and Phuong Le (Beyond Zero Emissions).
