The MCA has done well to secure a survey of Kader Attia works recipient of the 2016 Prix Marcel Duchamp prize, France’s most prestigious art award. Largely installation with some film and sculpture, the work explores themes of trauma and loss, emptiness and the void.

Ghost, 2007, for example, comprises 160 aluminium-foil casts of kneeling women in prayer. When approached from behind, they seem solid, yet the figures turn out to be empty shells.

“I’m fascinated by the devotion shown by people praying, in any religion. It’s the idea that when they pray, they transform the space. It becomes silent. After this, it [returns to] what it was again,” says Attia.

Conversely, the colourful and fragmented experience of Untitled, 2014, suggests an unmaking of history through 116 stained glass pieces set into a hole in the gallery wall.
