Gabrielle Bates’ exhibition – 18 Ways to Remember and Forget

Artist Gabrielle Bates' exhibition will launch in Sydney in August, shedding light on how we think about and remember a place

Artist Gabrielle Bates is launching her new exhibition, entitled ’18 Ways to Remember and Forget’, in Sydney this August.

The luminous abstract paintings are based on homes that Bates has lived in over the last twenty years, with the resulting layered paintings shedding light on how we think about and remember a place.

Bates has over 20 years of experience as an artist with her work spanning from professional exhibitions (including two residencies) to publication and project coordination. Bates also works in the Sydney real estate market as a copywriter, and assessing the best features of each property has had an influence on her art. She has taken the opportunity to think about how the concepts of home and place interact with one another, specifically in relation to the connection that humans have with place and history, and the stories that places tell.

The exhibition opens in Sydney on Tuesday 25 August at Sheffer Gallery (38 Lander Street, Darlington 2008) and will continue until Saturday 29 August. The gallery will be open from 11am to 6pm Wednesday to Saturday.

Guests are welcome for opening drinks with the artist at 6pm on Wednesday 26 August.
