On show at the University of Melbourne's Wunderlich Gallery, this exhibition features an installation inspired by the studio of Melbourne-based practice, Lyons.

The IDEA BUILDING:Lyons installation is a 'not-quite-right' recreation of Lyons' office, with large-scale, real-time video projections of the studio broadcast into the mock-up office. The installation fuses the real and the digital; the artificial and the real, with the background hum of the office environment periodically interrupted by members of the Lyons staff looking into the gallery space and observing visitors moving through the exhibition. Similarly, the real-time video of the Lyons office is occasionally halted and replaced with videos made by the staff.

The gallery installation attempts to match the character of the Lyons office using both faux and real materials, including photocopied ‘plywood’ panelled walls, pinboards, bike racks and rows of desks and chairs configured to match those in the Lyons office. In one corner, a laser printer prints out sketches, drawings, specifications, technical notes, images and articles sent from the office - with visitors invited to pin these to pinboard walls within the gallery.

No images of completed buildings are featured; instead, the exhibition explores the construction of ideas in architecture, through the collaborative work of many people, and the enterprise which persuades the practice that an ongoing exchange between ideas and the making of architecture is neither wasted nor exhausted.

IDEA BUILDING: Lyons is part of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning's Alumni Retrospective Series. This annual exhibition series celebrates the work of faculty graduates, highlighting their contributions to the Australian design culture and built environment.
