This project involves a new addition to the rear of an existing semi-detached terrace. Built with a lightweight steel frame and lined with timber and glazing, its form responds to established levels in plan, section and elevation. The folding form of the extension therefore meets the programmatic requirements of the client brief, and is also mindful of existing wall alignments and ridge levels so as not to impact adjacent properties.
Services are centralised within the existing footprint to enable proximity to bedrooms to the front and living spaces to the rear. A new bathroom, laundry and kitchen exist between the extended hallway and a new, open-plan living and dining volume. The addition provides a generous overall height that offers access to light and sky. Sliding timber door systems, frameless highlight windows and skylights offer access to light and ventilation, while improving visual connections via rear decks to a new landscaped courtyard.
Working with Edra from the start, Italian designer Francesco Binfaré has produced some of the brand's classics, including the recent Pack and Chiara sofa.
