Located in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern, Malvern Hill is a multi-residential project encompassing 120 dwellings on a one hectare site formerly occupied by an aged-care facility. In a typically conservative streetscape, the challenge was to bring higher density living into a neighbourhood that generally opposes densification.
The larger of the buildings sits adjacent to the commercial precinct on Malvern Road, while the low-rise apartment buildings reflect the suburb’s existing residential dwellings.
A series of courtyards and landscaped areas ensures connectivity and circulation through the site, and provide residences with access to plentiful natural light and a garden aspect. An underground carpark removes cars from street level, while a laneway traversing the site links Elizabeth and Warner Streets.
On the facades, warm toned timber cladding is paired with crisp white rendered boxes and glazed balustrades. Crafted metal screens offer a contemporary interpretation of wrought iron latticework.
