At the back streets of Kings Cross, amongst restaurants and pubs, stands the old building housing Watermoon.
Our task was to change the original tired pub into a restaurant that provides Japanese cuisine and traditional sake. The client requested an interior that communicated to people that Watermoon is a place to enjoy Japanese food and drink.
As represented by sashimi, the characteristic of Japanese food is to use the quality of raw material for a magical transformation to culinary art. We utilised the versatility of timber in various ways throughout the interior of Watermoon to materialise the spirit of Japanese cuisine. A lightbox at the centre of the restaurant operates as a canvas to project colourful shadows of backlit sake bottles from within, bringing out a gentle illuminence in the prominence of timber in this space.
The interdependence between the raw material of timber and the light filtered through sake bottles represent the relationship between this restaurants main attractions Japanese cuisine and sake.

Drainage is often the forgotten workhorse of the building and design function. Yet drainage maintains a simple albeit vital purpose.
