Constructed over a period of 24 days, The Doghouse is a pop-up bar created for a rooftop space located in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. Built by a dedicated group of industrial, interior and set designers, the project represents the final stage of a competition called The Premise: a competition which asked creatives from around Australia to submit design concepts for their dream bar.
The Doghouse, designed by Melbourne-based Rob Dumaresq and Hugh Gurney, was announced as the winner on 13 September – with the bar opening 24 days later.
The design of the bar recalls the speakeasy establishments of the 1920s and 1930s. Many of the features hark back to the prohibition-era, when illegal bootlegger bars used covert methods to conceal their activities: table fold out from the wall, while alcohol bottles hang from the ceiling of the bar. The entire experience encourages patrons to engage with the themes of secrecy and concealment.
