Facet Studio were asked to design a space to accommodate three co-existing businesses with very different needs: a graphic design studio, beauty consultation room, and graphic design school. In addition, the clients – a married couple who are also business partners – both had different ideas for how the space needed to be organised.
The end result features two regular spaces, boxed in by joinery units that respond to the respective scales of the graphic design studio and beauty consultant businesses. The boxes are given contrasting colours – one black, the other white. The third space, the school located in between the two boxes, is coloured grey to balance the two boxes.
The fitout accommodates contrast and character, celebrating the different interests of the clients with geometric irregularity. It is a working environment that allows for the richness of individual characters and gives structure to the ambiguity of spatial relationships.
