This window installation, created for the Italian department store La Rinascente, brings LAVA’s digital origami to the streets of Milan for the Contemporary Christmas Art window series.
A sequence of 1500 recycled cardboard molecules resembling a coral reef fill the space, exploring the similarities between natural and architectural systems. Dynamic lighting and sound bring the installation to life.
The installations shows how a particular module, copied from nature, can generate an architectural space. Each component works in symbiosis to create the environment – imitating how cities and urban environments function. In urban terms, the smallest homes, the spaces they create, the energy they use, the heat and moisture they absorb, multiply into a bigger organisational system, whose sustainability depends on their intelligence.
Chris Bosse of LAVA is one of seven designers participating in the series, with his design on show beside work by Kirsten Hassenfeld, Gyngy Laky, Andrea Mastrovito, Satsuki Oishi, Richard Sweeney, Margherita Marchioni and Tjep.
