Ferry Road Market is a part transformation of a redundant industrial retail precinct into a new form of public realm for the Gold Coast.
The design retains the original industrial tilt-up shell and layers over it a landscape screen utilising a material conventionally used as a porous underlay for grassed driveways.
The interior volume continues the employment of industrial elements, such as insertion of saw-tooth roofing, raw materials and fittings. It is arranged as a central courtyard space flanked by eating spaces and fresh food market, conveying the atmosphere of a public square by addressing shopfronts into the courtyard.
The projects prioritisation on sustainability is demonstrated throughout in the recycling of existing building fabric, in the translation of a readily available and cheap industrial product as sunscreen, in vertical planting for cooling and further sun control, in naturally ventilated and daylit interior spaces, in on-site water storage and distribution, and in rigorous use of sustainable and recyclable materials and species.
Ferry Road Market is a bold venture by a client who sought to revitalise a dilapidated and austere environment into an urban oasis, and as such is a distinctive catalyst for the clients future rehabilitation of the precinct.
Now in its eleventh year, Shaw Contract’s Design Awards program honors architecture and design firms that are changing the way people engage and interact with a space.
