White bread, tomato sauce and Devon?! Ex-Guillaume chefs, Zacharay Tan and Jacqui Ektoros, have set foodie tongues wagging with their latest cafe, Devon – a casual cafe at the end of Devonshire Street in Surry Hills, Sydney. In keeping with the cafe’s casual menu, the Matt Woods-designed fitout is an honest response to the existing architecture of the space.
A tight budget and space planning issues called for some lateral thinking for the delivery of this interior and its branding (who can spot the references to luncheon meat?).
The front area of the cafe is filled with sheet optimised PFS plywood – applied to the walls, ceiling, counter and furniture. A thin blue line snakes its way over the table tops and benches and up the walls onto the ceiling, a subtle ornament in an otherwise minimal setting.
To the rear, the space changes dramatically. An old garage space has been transformed into the quintessential streetscape, with graffiti geodes and tags sprayed onto the walls by street artist, Numskull. In the courtyard, camouflage netting, wire mesh fencing, corrugated iron and an edible green wall add to the streetscape vernacular.
This is a like-minded community of ILVENISTA’s, who share a common bond of cooking for family and friends with their ILVE cookers.
