This project is an extension to an earlier design completed two years prior which had enjoyed some acclaim in the media, both locally and abroad. The extension came about by virtue of a continually expanding family and the opportunity to secure an additional parcel of riverfront land adjacent to the main house.
By virtue of the complex and the highly detailed, bespoke nature of the original house (Balaam), the extension required a degree of simplicity and restraint so that it did not fight with the existing house. A more modest budget helped in making this call and allowed us to play on a paired down version of the original. In the original design, a series of weathering pavilions hang off the main structure and as such formed an obvious reference point for the primary elevation of the extension. This elevation now presents as a singularly simple box, punctuated by only one opening, allowing for the extension to exist symbiotically with the original.
