This simple extension to an existing 1940s brick cottage in Subiaco sought to alleviate the complicated ‘closed plan’ issues inherent in the existing house. Space was added in the form of a large living space, garage and upper level master bedroom/ensuite, while the existing space was altered to create three bedrooms at ground level and a new bathroom, laundry and kitchen.

A simple direct-plan vernacular was chosen to fit with Subiaco’s Streetscape Policy. The section through the upper and lower portions are lowered to the south to avoid overshadowing, while a fine-edged aluminium awning provides shade from the summer sun. Large format doors sit along the side wall, opening up the living space to the exterior. The open plan space features a passageway from the front to the back of the house, while slot windows on the upper level provide privacy and light.
