Built to meet the demands of a young family’s yearning for a tree change, this residence sits nestled among spectacular mature maple and oak trees in Victoria’s Dandenong ranges. The brief was to maximise exposure to the dramatic views over the Yarra Valley and Yarra Ranges beyond, while also focusing on the ESD principles of natural light, cross ventilation and breezeways.
The design, based internally and externally on modules of 1.2 metres, encompasses standard building dimensions, proprietary systems and prefabrication to reduce the typical costs of an architecturally designed house, while maintaining the simple clean lines and open spaces conducive to modern living.
The property was designed and built akin to the principles of predetermined ‘building blocks’. The cost and construction efficiencies associated with this modularity are significant and have allowed the client access to modernist design at an affordable price. While the building blocks are set, the number of permutations and combinations of floor plans, layouts, finishes and fittings are considerable and allow for extraordinary flexibility depending on the brief, budget and aesthetic.
