Bronte House

September 23, 2009

Tobias Partners introduce secluded outdoor spaces and natural finishes to a Sydney beach house.

The Bronte Road residence is perched high above the street to capture the scenic views of Bronte beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The renovation connects previously separate living zones through a common internal void space, incorporating a mid-level pool deck. The outcome is a successful integration of interior spaces orientated toward this outside deck.

The palette of finishes was carefully chosen with reference to the traditional Sydney beach house, using natural materials such as timber and sandstone against a backdrop of white walls and joinery throughout. Custom-designed timber privacy screens were commissioned as both decorative and highly functional sun-shading devices, whilst Blackbutt timber floors flow seamlessly from indoors to out. The striking, oversized sandstone boundary façade wall at street level pays homage to the local environment, with its prevalence of picturesque sandstone escarpments.
