West End Scott Street Kindergarten demonstrates that complex statutory requirements, brief and program can be balanced with desirable spatial and environmental outcomes. The decommissioned State Government preschool building was selected for redevelopment as a best-practice model for the Best Start program, encompassing the purchase & refurbishment of disused pre-school buildings across the state. The existing 1970s fitout did not meet the current stringent early childhood planning regulations and was therefore discarded. Working closely with a Play Environment Consultant and the kindergartens program director, the building was reworked to meet the needs of the children, parents, staff and government. This was done whilst maintaining and highlighting the heritage fabric and parti of the Character Residential zoned building.
Colour and furnishing were utilized as key markers of spatial hierarchy and identification, creating subtle zones for work and play. The heritage design elements such as the fireplace and windows, which were underutilized in the previous fitout, were highlighted to create a sense of warmth and homeliness that is conducive to an environment for children.
