Mark Gowing Design Studio

April 21, 2009

Designed by Christopher Polly, this lightweight steel-framed warehouse volume serves as a new studio for small design firm, Mark Gowing Design.

The design solution provides a large lightweight steel framed and unobstructed warehouse volume which responds to the various work methods and production of Mark Gowing Design, a boutique design firm providing a diverse service of creative branding and communications to the arts, publishing and corporate industries.

The rear of the building provides a service backbone for the firm, accommodating a toilet, kitchen and storage, all concealed behind a series of large sliding panels. This rear section of the building is set down in height addressing bulk and scale concerns to adjoining properties, while responding to its specific environmental conditions with north facing highlight louvres to capture prevailing summer breezes and exhaust warm air. The construction embraces utilitarian materials and methods –– a concrete slab providing a heat sink for its south facing orientation, exposed pre-finished steel posts and beams, white painted concrete block walls, rough sawn cypress boards and other prefabricated systems such as warehouse shelving for storage.
