Tongue n Groove Flooring, Melbourne

January 2, 2013

Conceived as a series of periscopes, Tobias Partners’ design for Tongue n Groove Flooring’s Melbourne showroom wholly utilises the timber flooring product as the heart of the display.

Tongue n Groove is a Sydney-based timber company, specialising in solid European oak boards they proclaim are “unrivalled in terms of size, strength, flexibility of use, stability and quality.”

Tobias Partners designed Tongue n Groove’s Sydney showroom 1.5 years ago, and has just completed work on their Melbourne flagship store.

Conceived as a series of periscopes that funnel light across the various rich finishes of the product and out into the brutalist industrial space of the showroom, the installation looks like something one might stumble across at an art exhibition. Giant ‘lenses’ of the periscopes dwarf the viewer/client, thus adding to the majestic stature of the fine timber product.

Nick Tobias, Principal of Tobias Partners says, “What’s particularly unique about this brief is that the medium is – quite literally – the message. We weren’t just designing a display to show off their product, their product is the display, and this fact adds layers of complexity we find really compelling.
