Hunters Hill Residence

The design of RLD’s Hunters Hill project contributes to contemporary interior decoration practice by encapsulating the modern Australian lifestyle.

The design of RLD’s Hunters Hill project contributes to contemporary interior decoration practice by encapsulating the modern Australian lifestyle. The design and decoration of the home meant that spaces flowed from the inside and out, visually and actively with a congruency of colours, textures and form.

RLD believes in designing a home that lives, excites and exceeds the client’s brief. It is not about creating museum environments.

The palette was inspired by our client’s vivacious auburn hair, which became the highlight colour, balanced with deep wenge, crisp white polyurethane and layering of natural textures and pattern.

The design methodology was to create a contemporary eclectic interior within a traditional Hunters Hill façade. RLD sought to use as many Australian designers and artists as possible, commissioning bespoke rugs, furniture, artworks and light fittings.

The use of colour was conceived to create a light and airy backdrop to the spatial formation of the interior. The strong external light that needed to pour through the house influenced the colour. The original house was a dark and low-ceilinged bungalow and it was important for the clients to live in an airy open interior.

The materiality contrasts with the interior space adding the balance of dark and light punctuated by the burnt orange punches of colour in the form of art, rugs, pinboard and splashback in the butler’s pantry. The interior is light and warm and the colour provides the airiness, engulfing spatial elements of contrasts with the strength of deep wenge balancing the rich sophisticated interior.
