Interior Design: Insight Advertising Agency

September 28, 2011

A creative and unconventional fitout for a Sydney-based advertising agency, designed by SNELL Architects.

The brief for this project was to produce something special for an advertising agency, on a conservative budget. Housed within a former textile factory in Surry Hills, the 400sqm space had timber floors throughout and high ceilings and required an unconventional and creative solution.

Recycled black plastic underground water reservoir tanks have been implemented to create a high-impact, low-cost unique and beautiful room divider. They are used in two areas, in two different ways: firstly providing entry and link spaces, and enclosing the boardroom area; and secondly functioning as a screen to separate storage and printing from the primary office space.

The client expressed an interest in a green wall, which was then adapted into a hanging garden. Using marine mooring techniques, a rope pulley system was devised to support a garden of hanging baskets throughout the office. Each staff member lowers and tends to their plant, using the pulleys along the side wall.

A quiet meeting room was required as part of the fitout. A transparent yellow object, internally lined in soft grey, was designed for this purpose – with external windows on one side, and glazing on the other. A 60 percent post-consumer recycled PET product lines the walls, while a soft grey 80 percent pre-consumer recycled content goat hair carpet lines the floor. Highlighted yellow beams and a feature yellow pendant lamp add a sense of fun. Beyond the entry, a bright high-gloss orange stripe draws people through the space and adds a flash of colour visible through the tank walls of the boardroom.
