Interior Design: APNIC

August 30, 2011

Arkhefield deliver a fuctional and flexible workplace wth a pared-back aesthetic for Brisbane-based organisation APNIC.

The interior architecture and design fitout for this not-for-profit organisation provides a flexible and adaptable home that also allows the building’s essential, raw state to be expressed. A minimal material palette complements the transparency and functionality of the existing building, while insertions of comfortable, multifunctional spaces underpin the core idea that the workplace should be as welcoming as home – achieving the design philosophy of balancing work and play.

The client wanted a workplace that told the story of APNIC: a smart, intelligent, flexible space that was cost-effective, sustainable and low maintenance. The design process offered APNIC maximum input to the decisions, allowing opportunities in the brief to be fully explored.

The tired, old building has been reinvigortated to embrace its raw qualities and engage with the urban context. The bones of the existing building were exposed to provide a framework in which built forms were added, creating hubs of flexible and adaptable spaces with no perimeter ownership. The culture of the organisation is apparent on entry and throughout the office, with a series of dynamic spaces including meeting areas, lounges, play zones, kitchens, informal nooks, benches and relaxation spaces. Work areas are reconfigurable to suit individual and team work. The office has been opened up to interact with the surroundings to help bridge the boundary between design and APNIC’s business drivers.

A transparency in process, materials and design has resulted in an apt, efficient, robust and energetic design.
