Windsor Shoptops

August 28, 2012

A pair of apartments above two Victorian shopfronts on Melbourne’s Chapel Street are remodelled by ITN Architects, creating an industrial aesthetic featuring flexible, open-plan spaces.

Two Victorian shops on Chapel Street in Melbourne’s Windsor have been substantially renovated and extended to introduce two apartments on the upper level, accessed from the rear laneway.

The old timber ceilings of the original building have been retained in the front bedrooms, while the rest of the apartment spaces take on a warehouse feel – admitting abundant natural light in through the sawtooth roof. Exposed original brickwork and recycled timber ceilings give the simple spaces character, with a flexible open-plan living area that could also function as office or studio space.

Outside, the large rear decks face onto the lane, where the building presents a simple and robust industrial face to the neighbourhood – ready to withstand the graffiti and wear of a laneway wall.
