Architecture: Manning Road House

June 8, 2011

Noxon Giffen’s Corten-clad residential project in Melbourne features two interior volumes, linked by a central spine and a dramatic 23-metre skylight.

This house is situated in Melbourne’s established south eastern suburbs, among predominantly historic red brick and tiled homes.?The project is a result of a long-term friendship and shared vision between client and architect, one that has evolved over the course of many journeys together.

The design is a manifestation of those experiences; the landscape, its forms, spaces, scale, colours, textures, light, shadow and materiality.?The brief called for a contemporary home for a young family of five, with additional accommodation for visiting family and friends. ?Two interconnecting interior volumes are linked by a central 23-metre-long continuous linear skylight. A balance between open communal and intimate private spaces provides the framework for evolving family life.

The sculpted form of the volumes responds to the site and environmental influences, and acknowledges the street and neighbourhood planning controls. Light scoops reach out to bring northern light into the bedrooms while skylights and screens allow light to animate the interior. ‘Crevices’ between the volumes bring landscape, light and ventilation into the heart of the dwelling, providing a seasonal display of light and shadow via operable windows and screens. ?A vented skin of Corten weathered steel wraps the building, and openings with timber batten screens provide privacy and filter light. The palette is raw and elemental; materials are imbued with richness and softness through the play of light and space.
