Interior Design: The Melburnian Apartment

June 7, 2011

Located in the Melburnian building on St Kilda Road, Carr’s apartment is a calm refuge with panoramic city views.

Perched high above the skyline in the iconic Melburnian building on Melbourne’s St Kilda Road, this sophisticated half-floor apartment is positioned on Level 13 in the West Tower. Originally two apartments that had been amalgamated into one by the previous owner, the challenge was to achieve continuity of space and rectify the poorly executed space planning and original layout.

The north-facing, single-level apartment is a calm refuge high above the busy city life below. The well-used living and dining spaces have been repositioned to enjoy the panoramic city skyline view, with materials chosen to dramatically reflect the city lights. High gloss finishes and fittings reflect and carry the light while mirroring spectacular views giving the space a sophisticated, contemporary elegance and a strongly urban aesthetic.

The level of detail is notable more for what is absent: pared back design providing a sense of serenity and order. The result is an apartment in which the cityscape reflects off the polished black granite stone, bronzed mirrors and glossy black surfaces, or diffuses against softened walls of timber joinery, fabric and furniture forms within.
