Interior Design: New Shanghai, Charlestown

April 19, 2011

Giant Design’s second fitout for the New Shanghai restaurant group blends traditional Chinese details with a contemporary aesthetic.

Following on from the success of the ["New Shanghai Chatswood Chase":] restaurant, the new eatery in Charlestown is the rural sister to the urban environment of Chatswood. All finishes are tactile and earthy, with traditional Chinese details mixed with a contemporary aesthetic.

The bamboo pergola has a leafy graphic surround, while the rear of the space has a Shanghai city skyline backdrop to give a sense of depth and context. The entrance has a steel lattice pattern on top of sliding glass panels, with a leafy graphic print applied to the glass behind. All the furniture is custom made for the project in China.
