Interior Design: Albert Road Apartment

March 28, 2011

With a limited material palette and expanses of oak flooring, Jolson’s Albert Road Apartment is designed as an inner-city sanctuary.

This apartment is housed in a former office tower, which had been converted into a residential building in the 1980s. The previous fitout belonged to the original conversion, finished 30 years ago.

Located at the western end of an arc-shaped floor plate, the elevated apartment affords intimate and distanced views to the north, west and south of inner Melbourne. In contrast to the activity of inner-city living, this apartment is designed as a sanctuary in the sky. While existing services informed where the bathrooms and kitchen were placed, the new open plan reinforces the primary radial structural grid of the building. The joinery placement and set out of the timber floor rotates with the structural grid.

The core material palette is limited to hand-scraped limed oak, travertine and off-white walls enriched by contrasting fabrics and surfaces such as leather, felt, linen and lacquer. Oak flooring has been used for the custom-designed dining table, bed and bathroom joinery to reinforce the simple combination of sculptural form and light in creating a tranquil interior.

The Albert Road Apartment was shortlisted in the Multi Residential category at IDEA 2010, and has been awarded at the 2010 Timber Design Awards (Best Interior Fitout, Residential & Best Use of Timber Flooring Winner) and 2011 Abode Awards (Best Bathroom Winner, Best Interior Runner Up & a Commendation for Best Kitchen). The project was also named Residential Floor of the Year (2011) by the Australian Timber Floor Association.
