Interior Design: Pearce House

February 10, 2011

Tobias Partners’ residential project in Sydney features refined timber detailing inside, and a weathered timber exterior inspired by the coastal setting.

The first-floor addition to this Sydney home is sympathetic to its coastal setting, with a box of weathered timber built above the existing masonry base of the house.

It delivers the opportunity for a double-height living space, with a mezzanine kitchen flanked by a balustrade of fine steel rods, and a new master bedroom suite which links to the existing children’s bedrooms via a timber bridge suspended above the living space.

The weathered timber of the addition, though sympathetic to the beachside setting, is refined in its form and detailing. Ocean views are maximised with the addition of outdoor decks at ground floor and first floor, while inside, vignettes of a mature deciduous tree will be seen from all levels, offering a visual reminder of seasonal change.
