Un-built: Central on Fletcher

January 28, 2011

TONIC architecture + design’s development will form part of the revitalisation of the former Townsville railyard in far north Queensland.

In mid-2010, TONIC was invited to participate in the competition for a concept design for a new retail and cinema development in the old railway yards in Townsville. The development forms Stage Two of the masterplanned precinct on the former railyards on Fletcher Street, and will provide high-end retail and leisure facilities, as well as a cinema complex, contained in a five-storey building.

TONIC’s competition winning concept includes an integrated approach between design and technology, with projection onto facades for events. Transparent spaces and visual interaction are enabled by screening strategies that are also an appropriate response to the climate. Public art strategies are also in planning stages.
