Interior Design: Globe International Headquarters

January 12, 2011

In Site transforms a former Cadbury’s warehouse in Port Melbourne into an industrial-inspired head office for skate brand, Globe.

Housed in an 11,000sqm former Cadbury’s factory in Port Melbourne that had been largely untouched since the 1960s, the new headquarters for skate brand Globe is a multi-faceted creative hub. Encompassing a new office and warehouse, skate ramp, café and film production suite, the expansive interior features steel trusses and original brick and paintwork.

The open-plan office space maximises available ceiling heights and volumes, with industrial-style pendant lights, fans and exposed ductwork creating a ‘studio’ aesthetic while retaining the scale of the original building. The café, too, is open-plan, with original chocolate factory trolleys, large communal tables and reused furniture lending the space an eclectic feel. The café includes a wood-fired pizza oven and an outdoor area, where staff can park their bikes on wall-mounted racks.

The studio spaces and film production facilities are simpler in design, with original timber floorboards, whitewashed brick stairwells and double-height saw-tooth roofs.

Wherever possible, the existing building has been retained – structure, walls, floor finishes, doors, windows and sanitary fittings. New materials were chosen to complement the texture of the old building, with burnished steel frames, coir-look carpet and ply partitions juxtaposed with concrete floors, timber boards and brick. Much of the joinery has been retained from Globe’s previous office fitout, originally designed by In Site in 2006. Low energy lighting is used when necessary, to complement the abundant natural light that fills the space.
