Interior Design: Nova Bar

September 7, 2010

A bar and lounge area at Nova Cinemas designed by ITN Architects draws inspiration from Hollywood glamour and neo-classical styling.

The existing Nova Cinemas Carlton have expanded their foyer space to include a bar and lounge area in an old undertaker’s building overlooking Lygon Street.

The design draws inspiration from the golden era of film and cinema construction, from the 1930s to the 1940s. The deco era’s interest in abstracted geometric patterning, sunburst and chevron shapes, as well as their concurrent interest in neo-classical styling, have been re-interpreted.

The bar uses simple classical archways to create more intimate spaces and frame interior views, while also referencing the existing arched windows to Lygon Street. The chevron zig-zagging mirrored panels give jewel-like reflections, and the back-lit marble bar and wall panels give the bar a classic Hollywood era glamour.
