Interior Design: Prahran House

April 28, 2010

SJB brings together bright colours, modernist furniture pieces and original architectural features to introduce bold contemporary design to this Victorian house.

The project philosophy behind Prahran House was to highlight the building’s original period details expressed in white, and contrast the space with contemporary art, furniture and period pieces.

The existing 1970s extension to the rear of the house has been exaggerated, with vivid green studded vinyl flooring offsetting the stark white timber ceilings, black and stainless steel joinery and custom painted industrial light fixtures.

Steel, black timber and laminates contrast with the white and yellow industrial pendant lights. Soft furnishings include original modernist pieces set against black and metallic linen sheers, velvets, linen tapestries and white marble and glass finishes, evoking the eclectic mix of an artistic home.

The coloured walls reinforce the original Victorian architectural details with a combination of antique and modern art. The use of colour is paramount in the fitout. A striking fuschia pink front door provides a focal point against the maritime grey and white detailing. The master bedroom is painted in moody blue velvet with matching carpet, while the guest bedroom is painted in serene mauve tones which sit against rich blue, satin curtains.
