Un-built: Alta Apartments

February 22, 2010

A luxury apartment development in Darlinghurst incorporating the busy streetscape into the open public area at ground level.

The Alta luxury apartment development in Darlinghurst is currently under construction. Located on the corner of Riley Street and Goulburn Street, Alta is close to the vibrant cafes and boutiques of the Oxford Street precinct.

The design was inspired by the colourful character and lifestyle of the surrounding area. The massing reflects the prominent corner and the expression of the adjoining buildings. The massing creates a podium element which reinforces the forecourt and the streetscape. The ground floor open plaza area draws the street into the development to create a seamless public domain area. This brings the vibrancy of the street life into the development.

The curved lines of the exterior present a softly contemporary apartment expression with the use of colour to accentuate the simple lines of the façade and massing.

The design is based on the principles of sustainable environmental design. A high proportion of units are through units to maximise natural ventilation and ensure maximum solar access to living areas. The remainder of the units are predominantly corner units to maximise ventilation and views. The use of louvers to the northern façade minimises solar heat gain and creates a strong vertical expression to the upper tower element.
