Lego Tower

The Icon apartment complex in cosmopolitan St Kilda, was conceptualised as a random stack of colourful Lego blocks, a vibrant new landmark for the area. Jackson Clement Burrows Architects led the design team, with artist Matthew Johnson consulting on the final exterior finish and colours.

The “Lego Tower” is clad in brightly coloured expanded metal mesh. Locker Group produced the expanded metal in their Dandenong manufacturing facility, working closely with Pace Development Group to deliver panels to suit the build schedule in the varying hues for each level. Each floor is covered in multiple depths of the chosen colour palette, the expanded metal covering the face and undersides of each ‘lego block’, providing a complete exterior wrap. The colours of the mesh are echoed in the frames for each panel.

The Expanded metal façade covers each residential level, including communal entertaining and recreation levels, and the multistorey car park that is situated below the residential apartments.
