Melbourne-based Spowers has won the inaugural World Architecture News Award for Education Building of the Year.
Designed by Melbourne-based practice Spowers, the Australian Technical College in Sunshine Victoria has been awarded the WAN Education Building of the Year 2009.
Selected by a diverse jury, including educational design experts, a school Principal and a 13-year-old pupil, the College was described as a fun and imaginative project, a wonderful place for the teachers and students.
Providing an alternative model for technical trade training facilities in Australia, the project addresses the challenge of designing a purpose built school for a specific student demographic while maintaining maximum flexibility of use within the confines of a tight government budget.
Gordon Murray + Alan Dunlop Architects also received a high commendation from the jury for their Hazelwood School in Glasgow, Scotland.
