The IDEA Gold Medal is the most prestigious award at the Interior Design Excellence Awards and is awarded in recognition of a distinguished contribution to the design industry over the course of a career. The 2012 IDEA jury nominated Paul Hecker and Hamish Guthrie for the Gold Medal, noting the consistency and depth of their work. The jury applauded Paul and Hamish’s ongoing consideration for the ways in which a project is put together and the place that the craftsman sits within it.

The pair is driven by a desire to make affective spaces that have genuine meaning for the people that occupy them. One of the first things Hecker refers to when describing his practice’s approach is the importance of layering and their dedication to craft.

With work ranging from the 1970s Miami glamour of Sydney’s Ivy to the indulgent elegance of Bistro Guillaume in Melbourne’s Crown Casino, Hecker Guthrie’s work has a decidedly hedonistic pedigree. Paul and Hamish were presented with the award at the IDEA Gala Party on Friday night, taking place at the Seymour Centre in Sydney.

“Hecker Guthrie is very proud to have been awarded the Gold Medal,” the pair said of the win. “We congratulate the IDEA team for putting on such a fantastic program – allowing a platform for showcasing excellence in design in Australia, and it’s with great enthusiasm that we continue the design process into the future.”

Hecker Guthrie also took home several other awards including the Residential Decoration award for their Park Street Residence in Melbourne. The practice was also highly commended for The Old Library in the Hospitality category and for Singapore restaurant Graze & Kha in the International Category.

The IDEA Gold Medal was introduced to Inside magazine’s IDEA program in 2010 as an important new award acknowledging lifetime contributions made to the Australian design industry by the country’s leading design luminaries. This year the Gold Medal was presented by The Balvenie. The award for 2010 was presented to Sue Carr, founder and director of Carr Design Group, and in 2011 to Janne Faulkner AM from Nexus Designs.
