Driven by the Brisbane Grammar School’s (BGS) vision to create a powerful learning experience for their students, the Lilley Centre is a significant investment in the future of learning. Wilson Architects, with a demonstrated history rooted in critical pedagogy/space/technology research and practice, worked closely with BGS to develop new teaching and learning spaces that best align with the School’s teaching practice.
The interiors visually connect back to the grounds and historic school buildings, eliminating any boundaries of learning. This Centre, incorporating the library and flexible teaching spaces, is integrated into the overall learning landscape. Visual and physical thresholds between spaces are climacteric. The arrangement of space allows for logic in the partitioning of noisy active spaces from the quiet reflective study and reading spaces.
At the active end of the spectrum, a two-storey collaborative learning area spatially organises the building. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively in groups, with the furniture and technology tailored to replicate and extend classroom learning. At its quiet extremity, students enjoy impressive views of the Great Hall, constantly reminding them of their School’s cultural heritage.
